Have you ever asked your autistic child – or any younger child – to help you put things away, only to be met with a blank look or instead they just ignore you and keep playing?
Music is a great way to help with transitions. I think of this song as a fun way to get the kids engaged and it creates predictability which just means that the brain knows what’s coming next and it helps you cope.
Kids might get a little worried that they won’t like the next thing that they are going to be doing or they are simply just enjoying play so much, that they don’t want to leave. Singing a song to help with the transitions and picking up of things helps make things a bit more smooth and it keeps everyone in a good mood.
This song’s lyrics are:
Just before you do something new
There is something that you must do.
Just before you do something new
There is something that we must do.
We put away our things when we are done with them
We put away our things when we are done with them
We put away our things when we are done with them
We put away.
